At Wheelbase, we know a quality car when we see one, so it was no surprise to us that Audi’s Q2 and A5 Coupe both took home awards in the 2016 Golden Steering Wheel awards.
Now in their 40th year, the Golden Steering Wheel Awards are a long-standing award from Germany’s top publications “Bild am Sonntag” and “Auto Bild”. 36 cars were put forward for awards this year, across six categories. Voted for by the people, these are awards which are really in touch with the average car buyer, and not a panel of industry experts or solely on the technical data or sales figures. With categories including “Best Hybrid” and “Best Compact”, there really is a category for pretty much every car on the market, including “Most Beautiful Car”.
Audi’s Q2 was successful in the “Best Compact SUV” category, beating serious competition from UK voters’ favourites, Peugeot’s 3008 and Seat’s Ateca. Voters love its style, and the huge range of well-engineered diesel and petrol engines, which make it a really economical drive. Owners praised it for making the driving experience enjoyable, and the fact that Audi offer so many ways to customise it. The well-thought-out storage and internal spaces made it popular with families.
The all round appeal of the A5 Coupe meant that it was awarded “Best Sports Car”, despite the UK’s Auto Express describing it as “not the most exciting on the market”, before conceding that its high quality production, fantastic driving experience and classy appearance put it way above both BMW’s M2 and Porsche’s 718 Boxster. As a bonus, this four seater is jam-packed full of the latest tech features, and has a choice of very responsive engines.
Once again, Audi have done themselves proud, with the awards for the Q2 and A5 being the 26th and 27th Golden Steering Wheel award for the trophy cabinet. No other car manufacturer has won this many Golden Steering Wheels.
